July Small Business Feature: Shearwater Excursions

Nantucket, MA

How did your business get started?

Founders Blair and Rachael were traveling in Mexico in the early 1980s and took an eco-tour on a riverboat in the jungle. Realizing Blair had the same knowledge base as the guide, they decided to bring the concept of eco-tourism to Nantucket. It took about a dozen years to realize their dream.

How has the pandemic affected your business?

We managed to stay busy by offering a lot of private charters during the Pandemic, but we are very happy to be opening our trips up to individuals and families alike.

What are your favorite products or services that you currently sell?

I love that we offer charters for all ages. Each year that our kids grew, we did different boating activities with them, and that is the concept that our business has adapted…to offer an experience that families can enjoy, depending upon the ages and stages they are at! Each of our charters also has an educational component. My current favorite charter is the Oyster Farm Tour! There is so much to learn about what goes into growing the perfect Nantucket Oyster!

What are a few fun facts about your business?

A fun fact about Shearwater Excursions is that if you don’t see an Excursion that you like, you can design your own! Another fun fact is that no matter what trip you take, you will meet at least one member of the Perkins Family!

What advice do you have for someone in the beginning stages of owning a business?

When you own your own business your day never stops! I would say that you need to know that going into it, but don’t be afraid of the work, because you are doing something that you love!
